Wilmington, North Carolina a charming port city is located in the southeastern corner of North Carolina between the Cape Fear River and the Atlantic Ocean. The city has more than 65000 residents and is home to the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. The town of Wilmington was incorporated in 1739. The City is governed by a non-partisan City Council consisting of a mayor, mayor pro tem, and five council members. Elections are held every two years. The Mayor serves two-year terms and the council members serve staggered four-year terms. The Council also appoints a City Attorney who gives legal advice to the City, a City Clerk whose job it is to maintain official records for the City, and a City Manager who carries out the policy decisions of the Council through the City’s staff of approximately 1,100 employees.
